Questions from Message #1: The Anatomy of a Living Church

Colossians 1:1-8

  1. Read through the passage together and highlight anything that struck your attention.
  2. Did you notice that the work of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit is mentioned 9 times combined just in these 8 verses! Look them up, and list what it is they are doing specifically. What does this tell you about the God of the gospel?
  3. Paul calls all Christians “saints,” meaning to be set apart. What do you think that means in practice? What are we set apart from, and to?
  4. Verse 3 is what many call “a salutation.” A very old word for a most wonderful reality. “Grace and peace from God our Father,” gives us the center of what God’s intentions are for us in Christ. Discuss the relationship between these two elements.
  5. The cardinal quality of thankfulness to God is greatly emphasized in this letter. But why, specifically, is the quality of thankfulness so central to the life of the Christian? And why thankfulness to God, our Father?
  6. What does “faith in Christ Jesus” mean? If the cross of Christ is so central to our salvation, what does His work offer us? What does it mean to live this out daily in practice?
  7. The gospel was constantly bearing fruit and increasing in and through them. Discuss the implications of that in our daily mission here.
  8. The three elements of faith, love, and hope may well encompass the beginning, the middle and the future of our eternal story. So, what does love look like in our little flock?
  9. Notice that this love is for all the saints. What are practical ways for love to include all the saints?
  10. Lastly, how much do you think upon our hope laid up for us in heaven? What minimizes this for us? What do you think our hope includes?
