Sermon 3: Grace-Based Grief (Matthew 5:4)

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted

1. How is spiritual poverty (v3) related to mourning? (v4)

2. How can the Christian life be said to be a life of the fruits of the Spirit, love joy, peace, etc, and yet be a life of mourning? Isn’t that a contradiction?

3. I say that “The true Christian does not minimize, excuse, blame shift or ignore their sins.” Is this not an overly morbid overdose of introspection?

4. Look at Luke 7:38-50, especially the latter part. What seems to be the relationship repentance and the worship of Christ?

5. Spiritual poverty is one thing, but being contrite is another. What do you think I mean?

6.  I say that it is possible to put on a pseudo pasted-on smileand pretend that we are doing better than we are. How does coming to the Cross for daily cleansing stop us from faking it?

7. “Evangelical Christians, make much of grace, but sometimes thereby make light of sin. There is not enough sorrow for sin among us,” says John Stott. Think about Stott’s statement for a minute. What do you think? How would that affect your walk with Christ?

8. I mention that Grace-Based Grief affects every part of life, personal, marital, vocational, church and the lost. Have I overstated that? If not, why not?
