1. When you think of the word “meekness” what instantly comes to mind?
2. Think about this. When you picture Jesus as humble/gentle, does it speak more of His first coming or His second coming? Why?
3. Be honest. Does gentleness/humility sound attractive to you? Why or why not?
4. This will require a bit more reflection. How can humility be thought of as radical?
5. Look at Philippians 2:1-8. Think long and hard about verse 1 in particular. In the message I say we can afford to be gentle. Any idea what I’m getting at?
6. Leon Morris says that “self-assertion is never a Christian virtue.” Allow that to sink in for a minute. Now ask yourself, how difficult is that? How does it feel to be stripped of our default desire to be known, seen, appreciated, not overlooked, not ignored? Does it feel like a kind of dying?
7. Would the last question not leave us feeling like a doormat? Is this not an invitation for others to walk all over us?
8. Now go back to question 5, except focus more on v 5. Can you imagine Jesus ever feeling like a doormat, and yet the Word says He came to serve and not be served? (Mark 10:45)
9. Lastly, in what way is the promise, “we shall inherit the earth” an encouragement for us now? Remember, an inheritance is not earned, it is a gift. Of course, the Jews still have the promise of the land of Israel, but the Christian gets the whole earth! How does that work? I guess all that we can accumulate now sounds like pittance, doesn’t it? So why bother accumulate just for the sake of it? Does it not sound silly when we are inheriting the earth?
10. Spend some time in thanksgiving for His blessing both now and the future.
